Manchester City, usually dominant in the Premier League, now finds itself at a low point. Sitting seventh in the current standings, this is arguably Pep Guardiola’s worst Christmas gift during his tenure with The Citizens. With just 27 points, City trails Liverpool by 12 points, as the Reds comfortably lead the table.
This outcome is certainly disappointing for a team of City’s caliber. Over their last eight Premier League matches, Erling Haaland and company have managed only one win, one draw, and suffered six defeats. This poor run of results has left them outside the top six, an unprecedented position under Guardiola's leadership.
Since Guardiola took charge in 2016, City’s worst Christmas position was sixth during the 2020/2021 season. However, even then, they managed to bounce back and ultimately claimed the title that year. Similarly, last season, City dropped to fifth at one point but overtook Arsenal to secure the Premier League trophy by the end of the campaign.
The question is: Can City pull off another spectacular comeback this season? Mathematically, the chance for a revival still exists. However, with inconsistent performances, Guardiola’s task to turn the tide seems more challenging than ever.
One key factor to address is the effectiveness of their attack. Haaland, as the main goal-scoring machine, needs greater support from creative midfielders like Kevin De Bruyne, who is currently sidelined due to injury. Additionally, the defense requires improvement, as City has been prone to conceding goals at critical moments.
For City fans, this is undoubtedly a tough time. Yet, Guardiola is not a manager who gives up easily. With his wealth of experience and tactical brilliance, there remains hope that The Sky Blues will find their way back to winning form.
This Christmas may feel bitter for City, but the season is far from over. If any team can turn things around and write an epic comeback story, it is Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.
